University Public Council Board

Appointed by the rector, the university Public Council is responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of the University’s Civic Mission and its Civic University Plan.  This will be achieved through advancing the University’s ambitions and delivered through the integration of its civic commitments with other thematic and enabling strategies such as research, teaching and learning, internationalisation, estates and sustainability.
The Council builds on significant existing institutional commitments made, e.g. to carbon reduction, inclusion and skills development targets, where appropriate linking these efforts with those of civic and community partners to help them attain their objectives.
Our aim is to support staff when engaging with civic and community partners, sharing their expertise to make a difference. Through our connections with civic and community partners, we strive to enhance the student experience: provide a wider range of opportunities for students to engage with communities and organizations in the city; develop student and staff skills while connecting with the city and its communities and; contribute to their wellbeing and prosperity.

The Public Committee's objectives revolve around fostering [mention the key objectives and areas of focus, e.g., community engagement, communication, etc.]:
Promote Open Dialogue: We aim to provide a platform for open discussions and exchange of ideas among members of the university community.
Enhance Transparency: We strive to enhance transparency by sharing information about university policies, decisions, and events.
Collaboration: We facilitate collaboration between different segments of the university to create a harmonious and productive environment.
Community Engagement: We organize events, workshops, and initiatives to actively involve the community in university matters.

The Board has final accountability for the production and governance of the annual and investment plans.  Each Board member has a responsibility to:
Maintain and strengthen collaborative links with civic and community partners, working towards agreed social purposes and shared agendas
Assess and publicly support the outcomes from the Civic Mission including providing insight into impact
Identify, assess and mitigate innovation risk at an institutional level as well as horizon scanning at a sector level
Ensure all investments and gap funding proposals are in line with University Strategies & Policies
Agree on the achievability of business cases, plans and roadmaps
Activity and behaviour should embody the University’s values

Workshop Series on Inclusivity: We successfully conducted a series of workshops focusing on promoting inclusivity across campus. These workshops brought together students, faculty, and staff to discuss strategies for creating a more diverse and welcoming environment.
Policy Enhancement: Our efforts in enhancing transparency and communication have resulted in the successful implementation of new policies that address concerns raised by our stakeholders. These policies aim to improve various aspects of university life, from academic matters to campus facilities.
Community Outreach Campaign: The committee organized a community outreach campaign in collaboration with local organizations. This initiative aimed to extend the university's impact beyond campus boundaries and promote educational initiatives in the wider community.

 

Open Dialogue Sessions: We're actively hosting open dialogue sessions that provide a platform for constructive conversations between students, faculty, and administration. These sessions facilitate a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by our university community.
Collaborative Research Projects: The committee is currently engaged in collaborative research projects that involve students and faculty from various disciplines. These projects encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.
Student Feedback System: We're developing a comprehensive student feedback system that will enable students to share their opinions and suggestions on various university matters. This system will further enhance our commitment to involving students in decision-making processes.

 

Annual Community Symposium: We're excited to announce our upcoming annual community symposium, where students, faculty, and community members will gather to discuss pressing issues and potential solutions. This symposium will promote dialogue and foster collaborative problem-solving.
Faculty-Student Mentorship Program: To promote stronger ties between faculty and students, we're launching a mentorship program that pairs students with faculty members based on their academic interests and goals.
Campus Sustainability Drive: In line with our commitment to sustainability, we have plans to launch a campus-wide sustainability drive that will involve student-led initiatives to reduce the university's environmental footprint.
