The Program that travels back in time to explore the ancient trade route that once linked the East and West. Stretching from the Roman Empire to the ancient Japanese capital of Nara, this route not only carried silk but later facilitated the trade of tea, horses, camels, medicinal herbs, jewelry, porcelain, silver and ivory goods. Named the ‘Great Silk Road’ by German scholar Ferdinand von Richthofen in 1877, it remains a testament to historical connectivity.

This journey through history will delve into the monumental significance of the Timurid Empire in Uzbek history. During the studies, participants will uncover the reforms, literary achievements, cultural and economic innovations of this era with a special showcase of rare manuscript books from the Timurid period. The cultural hubs of Samarkand, Shahrisabz and Tashkent will provide the backdrop as we build a global perspective on the Timurid legacy. Participants will also gain in-depth knowledge about Alisher Navoiy's contributions under the Timurid dynasty, a period that marks a distinct era in Uzbek literature.

Summer School will provide insights into one of the essential elements of classical Uzbek literature – Sufi Teachings, their role in the Eastern Renaissance and their significance. We will explore the essence of Sufism, highlighting that Sufism included not only male ascetics but also female saints drawing upon examples such as the 33 Sufi women mentioned in Alisher Navoiy’s work ‘Nasoyim ul-muhabbat’ to illustrate their place in the history of Islamic law. Then we will turn our attention to the Jadid movement, a pivotal force in the political life of Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan (then Turkestan), at the turn of the 20th century. The Program will present the specific conceptual goals of this movement, and the scientific and literary legacy they left behind. We will also examine why the Jadid leaders advocated for the youth to study in Turkey and Germany and discuss the poignant fates that befell the enlightened young upon their return to their homeland, all through the lens of historical sources. TSUULL Summer school is a gateway to the past, offering a tapestry of learning experiences that illuminate the rich cultural heritage and historical narratives of Uzbekistan.
