Overview: On October 11, 2024, TSUULL hosted an inspiring public talk titled “Women in Modern Japan: A Journey Through Time”, delivered by Anna Pak, a renowned specialist in Japanese art and culture. The lecture examined the historical and modern roles of women in Japan, highlighting how gender expectations have shifted over time and where the nation stands today in terms of gender equality.
As part of the #TSUULLTalks series, the event offered students and the wider community an opportunity to reflect on the evolving status of women in Japanese society, fostering dialogue on both historical traditions and present-day challenges.
Speaker: Anna Pak is an expert in Japanese art and culture. She graduated from the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH), completed professional development courses at the University of California, Los Angeles (USLA), and studied Japanese cursive writing at the University of Cambridge (UK) and The University of Chicago (USA).
She has worked as a curator of the East Asian painting and graphic art collection at the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow and collaborated with the Multimedia Art Museum on numerous exhibition projects. She was also the curator of the “Art of Manga” exhibition.

Anna is the author of books on Japanese culture and art, and a frequent guest speaker on educational television and radio programs. She has delivered lectures and presentations at leading institutions such as the Moscow Kremlin Museums, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum für Asiatische Kunst in Berlin, Peking University, University of Zurich, and Ruhr University Bochum.
