Building a Future Without Poverty: Free Meals Program for Students from Low-Income Families

Since its foundation, Alisher Navo'i Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature has upheld a strong tradition of care and social responsibility. From the very beginning, the institution has provided free daily lunches to students from low-income families, ensuring that financial hardship never hinders anyone’s access to education. What started as a small act of compassion has grown into a core part of our university culture — a lasting symbol of solidarity, equality, and support for every student in need. This long-standing commitment continues today through the permanent Free Lunch Program, carrying forward the founding vision of creating an inclusive and humane academic community.

Permanent Free Lunch Program for Students from Low-Income Families

As part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring equal access to education and promoting student well-being, our University has introduced a permanent Free Lunch Program designed to support students from low-income families. This long-term initiative is not merely a short-term measure, but a sustainable policy aimed at building a compassionate and inclusive academic community where every student has the opportunity to thrive regardless of financial background.

Through this program, eligible students receive nutritious, balanced meals every day on campus, allowing them to concentrate fully on their academic goals without the burden of worrying about their most basic needs. By addressing one of the key barriers to student success — food insecurity — the University helps ensure that no talented individual is left behind due to economic hardship.

Beyond providing meals, the initiative serves a broader purpose: it strengthens the University’s mission to promote social justice, equality, and dignity for all students. The program encourages a culture of empathy, solidarity, and shared responsibility, reminding the entire university community that education flourishes only when basic human needs are met.

The initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1 – No Poverty, contributing to global efforts to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger through education-based solutions. By integrating social support mechanisms into the learning environment, the University demonstrates that higher education can be a powerful driver of both academic excellence and social progress.

Our institution continues to provide various forms of assistance — financial, social, and academic — to ensure that every student can complete their education successfully. The Free Lunch Program stands as a vivid example of our dedication to the principle that financial challenges should never stand in the way of learning, growth, and personal development.

Through this initiative, the University reaffirms its belief that true equality begins with access to opportunity — and that a simple act of care, such as a daily meal, can open the door to a brighter and more equitable future for all. With this sustained commitment, the University continues to set a strong example of how educational institutions can transform lives by combining academic rigor with meaningful social support.
