On 14 September 2023, Antonina Kseinova, MA in International Security Studies (University of Trento & Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Italy), Intern at UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia, delivered a guest lecture entitled ‘SDG 5 and SDG 8: Understanding the Cost of VAW: Central Asia’, which took place at International Office Hall on Thursday.

Most of the content of fundamental human rights had been included into SDGs, for instance health, education, gender equality, and women’s empowerment.

The lecture was held in English and was also attended by 30 students. The topic aroused great interest, thus many questions ensued.

GBV not only affects women’s physical and mental wellbeing, it also prevents them from reaching their full life potential. Experiencing GBV leads to severe mental health problems such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder as well as reproductive and other related problems affecting maternal and neo-natal health, physical injuries, and other chronic health conditions. Moreover, GBV carries a heavy economic cost for society, resulting in women and girls’ underachievement in education, work and overall productivity. According to some studies, this cost can range from 1% to 3% of a country’s GDP.

This lecture covered the economic costs of GBV at different levels: individual, local, national and international. The aim of the lecture was to present a comprehensive picture on the criticality of the issue of GBV and its repercussions for sustainable development and prosperity of a society. Additionally, a special focus was given to most widespread rape myths and cultural intricacies of the region that deepen the problem.
Sustainable Development Goals 5, 8 which are related to the lecture theme, are one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015.
