Promoting SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Urbanization
Due to World Cities Day which is celebrated on 31 October, we are encouraged to mark the day by organizing events through public-talks, workshops or webinars, panel discussions and interviews.
Area: Sustainable Cities, Urban Development, Accessibility and Inclusion, Urban Studies, Global Problems
SDG: 11
The goal formulates the ambition to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable - underlying the relevance of UN-Habitat’s mission. Inequalities in cities have grown since 1980. The world's largest cities are also often the most unequal, and this year’s theme is embraced by the action and implementation of the New Urban Agenda, which is putting the topic of inclusive cities as one of the main pillars for the urban shift.
Urbanization provides the potential for new forms of social inclusion, including greater equality, access to services and new opportunities, and engagement and mobilization that reflects the diversity of cities, countries and the globe. Yet too often this is not the shape of urban development. Inequality and exclusion abound, often at rates greater than the national average, at the expense of sustainable development that delivers for all.
Cities around the world are trying to find ways to reclaim their streets for people, for walking, biking, and scootering from point to point. The goal is to make cities safer, cleaner, and more fun while reducing or eliminating altogether the number of cars and trucks that have dominated urban landscapes for almost a century.
University’s summary of activities for this goal across urban development: this month we will talk to the urban practitioner in Urban Studies on Urban Mobility as part of Sustainable Urban Development.
