New Group Successfully Completes Sign Language Course at Alisher Navo'i University
At Alisher Navo’i Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature, inclusion is more than a concept — it is a commitment. As part of its ongoing dedication to accessible education, the university runs a free Uzbek Sign Language Club, open not only to students, but to anyone eager to learn this vital means of communication.
Launched in November 2024, the course has drawn a diverse group of participants, including two international students — Stephanie Lee from the United States and Allison Levik from Australia — who stood out for their enthusiasm and leadership, inspiring others by example.
Among the most heartwarming stories from this cohort is that of 14-year-old Zilolabonu Xoliqova, who is hearing impaired. Zilolabonu had long dreamed of learning sign language but had struggled to find suitable courses. For individuals like her, who navigate the world in silence, sign language is more than just a tool — it’s a bridge to friendship, expression, and inclusion in society. Thanks to this course, that dream has finally come true.
Another touching chapter unfolded when a woman named Gulnoza responded to the course announcement. As it turned out, her son Dilshod is a third-grade student at School No. 106 in Tashkent, which serves children with hearing impairments. Thinking about her son's future, Gulnoza not only joined the course herself but also brought along Dilshod's younger brother, Zafar. Today, having completed the course, she can communicate freely with her son in sign language — a milestone that speaks volumes.
Last week, the final exams for the course were held under the supervision of experts from the Tashkent branch of the Society of the Deaf of Uzbekistan, including Chairperson and professional interpreter Gulnora Mahkamova, staff member Shuhrat Naimov, and youth representative Otabek Sarimsoqov.
At the certificate awarding ceremony, the university’s Vice-Rector for Youth Affairs and Spiritual-Educational Work, Gulnoza Jo‘rayeva, along with Head of the Appeals, Oversight, and Monitoring Department, Ra’no Azizova, congratulated the course graduates and wished them continued success on their journey of inclusion, communication, and empowerment.
